Legend is actually Book 1 of the Drenai series. It isn't a standalone.

can not believe that this great book is only third, in my humble opinion having read the others as well, it is far better than those selected to be ahead of it.

I couldn't disagree more with this review of Legend!
Gemmell only ever wrote his characters in shades of grey - you have "heroes" that are psychopaths and madmen and are considered heroes because they happen to be killing for the "right" side, and "villains" who are doing bad things only for what they consider to be the greater good.

Agree with the last comment, this review is the opposite of how I read Gemmell books. Nothing is ever black and white, everything is considered in terms of unforeseen consequences affecting innocent victims.

Where I do agree is that Gemmell is the best story-teller there ever has been. You'll read better prose, better characterisations, etc, but you'll never read stories that are as well woven together as Gemmell's.

I think the characters in Legend were incredibly black and white. I was extremely disappointed after reading the Rigante series. The characters are two dimensional and the scale is tiny.
