Nathaniel is a magician's apprentice, taking his first lessons in the arts of magic. But when a devious hot-shot wizard named Simon Lovelace ruthlessly humiliates Nathaniel in front of his elders, Nathaniel decides to kick up his education a few notches and show Lovelace who's boss. With revenge on his mind, he summons the powerful djinni, Bartimaeus. But summoning Bartimaeus and controlling him are two different things entirely, and when Nathaniel sends the djinni out to steal Lovelace's greatest treasure, the Amulet of Samarkand, he finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of magical espionage, murder, and rebellion.

The book is average at best. Along the lines of eddings or brooks. Seems like the boooks that make the list are what you have read latley. There were more than a handful of good books before 2000 you know, and that is coming from a guy in his 20's. A book shouldn't even be eligable until the book is at least 10 years old. You should make a seperate "all time" list so you can put the rencent titles as well. If this seemed abrasive, it was not my intent.

When I was in middle school, this book made me fall in love with fantasy. It's very funny and still one of my favorites, but it's definitely written for a younger audience.

On the 25 list the guys makes it seem darker and scarier than it really is.

Having read this series recently (as an adult), I found it to be thoroughly entertaining. It has the feel of a young adult series, but it is not overly stupid. I loved the personality of Bartimaeus and the inanity of the whole culture. These books are definitely worth a read, though it is good to go into them knowing that they are not overly serious in tone.

This is a great series. The characters are fantastic and the ending of the series is one of the best I've read.
